What Is the Reason for Lucifer’s Physical Vulnerability?

Lucifer might be the devil, but he also works with the police on different cases. During his duty, he often confronts many criminals who are not hesitant to hurt him to achieve their goals. His devilish abilities must make him invisible in front of the gun-wielding thugs, right? But it seems that is not the case with Lucifer when he is around Detective Chloe Decker for some reason. When she is with him, he becomes vulnerable like everyone else. But what explains this weird human-like mortal vulnerability? Season 5 finally gives some explanation.

Angels are capable of self-actualizing, which means they are able to affect their physical forms by the way they think and see themselves. This means their opinion has a significant impact on their physical abilities and therefore has serious consequences as well. An excellent example of this can be seen in season 2 when Amenadiel thought that he was unworthy of his angelic powers, he ended up losing them along with the wings. In season 3, something counter entirely to this happens when Lucifer was able to grow his wings because he firmly believed that he deserved them. His subconscious thoughts were enough to get what he wanted, and this shows how strong the self-actualization of angels is.

When in season 3 Lucifer regrew his wings, he was also able to get rid of his devil face. He did not know how he was doing it, but with his relationship with Chloe, he can finally see the angelic side to him. Going by how self-actualization works, that must have been the reason for his changes. But when he killed Cain, that too in front of Chloe, he reverted back to his devilish form. For the most part of season 4, Lucifer struggled as Chloe refused to accept him.

In season 5, self-actualization is then used to help explain his vulnerability when he is with Chloe. When Detective Decker is around him, Lucifer figuratively drops his shield. Now, self-actualization works on how the angels see and think about themselves, so, with Chloe, Lucifer becomes vulnerable and capable of being hurt like regular mortals. He is also able to reflect other people’s desire that they project onto him, making himself more attractive.

But Chloe is different since she accepts Lucifer the way he is and does not reflect her desires onto him. This enables her to see and understand what he is like truly. Her honesty and love make it easier for Lucifer to let go of his guard and become emotionally vulnerable; this is the underlying cause of his vulnerability when working alongside Chloe.

While season 5, answers many questions but it also brings new dilemmas to tackle. For example, in episode 7, Lucifer is suddenly no longer physically vulnerable with Chloe. What can explain this anomaly? Michael explains that it is because Lucifer is no longer emotionally vulnerable to Chloe. But that does not seem logical. Whatever may be the reason, even though season 5 has answered some of the reasons for Lucifer’s vulnerability, but there are still some anomalies that still stand unexplained.
