Phase 4 of MCU is going to be amazing as more movie titles are going to hit the theaters. One of them is a sequel to Doctor Strange named the Multiverse of Madness. The flick was supposed to be directed by Scott Derrickson; however, approximately one year before the release of the movie, he stepped down from the project due to “creative differences” with Marvel Studios.
This movie is not only another draft of MCU, but it will define the multiverse platform where the upcoming Marvel TV Series (Wanda Vision and Loki) going to take place. Still, Scott will be connected to the project in the form of an executive producer. There are speculations that his departure may affect the release of the movie in July 2021.
Derrickson’s script of the sequel is going to be a dark-themed MCU movie. It is approaching the complete horror genre as MCU is trying to get the attention of a mature and developed audience. But slowly, there was speculation that the head of Marvel (Kevin Feige) and Disney does not want that to happen. Even Feige said what toned down Derrickson’s comment in the San Diego Comic-Con “Multiverse of Madness is a big MCU film with scary sequences in it.”
Disney and Marvel studios prefer their filmmaking like Thor-Ragnarok, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and they are focusing on the consistency. Marvel and Disney’s executives are now trying to figure out a way to carry out cinematic universe storytelling in the form of episodes on Disney+. According to former head strategist Matthew Ball ” Universe relies on the consistency and continuity that goes beyond each individual.”
Marvel is one of the major components of Disney+ success. One of the executives of content on Disney+ explained that there is a possibility that the series story arcs and characters can be the part of MCU.
Like everyone else, Feige also wants to make an excellent sequel. But there is another priority, which is to make sure a seamless transition between movies and Series. That is what the legend Stan Lee said “illusion of change.”
Peter David, a former writer of Hulk comics, addressed in a blog that Lee said that the secret of success of Marvel is to show that changes in character’s life affect others too. According to David’s post,” the main problem, on the hand, is some fans want to see the real change, but on the other, as creator, we are in the box.” In addition to that, he wrote that when they make something seem endless without any harm, a happy and cheerful ending, but when those things change, fans want it back and demand that those changes should be undone.
Thor-Ragnarok and Black Panther achieved great success because the creator had the freedom to make the movie. There is a thing that the creating style of these directors matched with the vision of Marvel. When it comes to this sequel and its genre, Marvel and Disney have a chance to cover a new group of audience to the group, and there is a chance of losing some of the fan bases too. If the Multiverse of Madness fails to spin up the hype for streaming Series of MCU, it could affect a large part of the audience of Disney+ as per domino effect. For Marvel and Disney, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is more than just a stand-alone movie.
